The Role:
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Specification of equipment required to allow automation of a drilling rig’s control functions;
• Liaison with drilling contractor’s equipment department and C&P department on any equipment issues concerning upgrades and/or purchasing of new items required;
• Work closely with third party equipment and service providers on the rigs to implement upgrades, modifications etc to the existing system;
• Oversee all Instrumentation issues in close cooperation with local PACO (Automation Engineering) assets;
• Liaison with automation specialists and writers of programming code to ensure the rig equipment responds to computer-generated commands in a manner consistent with good drilling practices;
• Cooperation with various IT specialists to ensure a consistent and reliable flow of data both at the rig site and to remote monitoring centers as may be appropriate;
• Advise drilling contractor throughout the process of hiring local crew members to ensure the appropriate skill-levels are sourced from the market;
• Train and mentor new personnel in the safe and efficient operation of the system;
• Define drilling process control limits with respect to rig limitations, local drilling practices and drilling programme requirement;
• Responsible for implementation of integrated directional drilling and logging while drilling software packages;
• Liaison with site and office operations personnel to facilitate system operation;
• Drilling optimisation: liaise both with Shell Canada and Global Deployment Team;
• Assist with transition of WellVantage operations to the Drilling Automation Remote Technology Centre in Calgary – if applicable;
• Responsible for further associated new technology roll out as suggested by the Global Deployment Team.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- 30+ years of experience in the oil and gas industry
- 20+ years of experience in Management or Supervisory role
- Masters degree and PhD highly preferable
- Strong communication and analytical skills
