Piping Designer / Draughtsman

The piping designer / draughtsman role in Dorset is to support the forward drive to improve efficiencies on site and hence is being advertised as a long term staff developmental role.

Job Overview:
Reporting primarily to the Document Controller within the Engineering Team on site the Piping Engineer/ Draughtsman will work closely with the project and mechanical discipline engineers on site – spread amongst the Maintenance, Integrity and Engineering Teams. The role will be primarily to do ad hoc piping design and drafting works for maintenance, integrity and small engineering project activities on site. There will also be a need for the individual to work with the document control team to assist with as-built drawing updates that will come from the commissioning team as part of project close-outs.
The individual will need to work with a cross-section of individuals on site and hence will need very good communication and people interaction skills in order to successfully execute their role.

Job description:
Whilst reporting to the Document Controller on site the designer/draughtsman will primarily work under the direction of one of the mechanical discipline engineers on site (in either the Maintenance, Integrity or Engineering Team). Typical responsibilities will be to:-
• Preparation of piping drawings to latest client UK specs & recognised codes and standards.
• Provide Engineering & Technical support regarding drawings & documentation to the Operations Teams.
• Survey Piping systems out on site.
• Design, produce, update and as-build Isometric’s, P&ID’s & schematics, utilising Microstation & AutoCad software.
• Prepare Material Take Offs (MTO’s) for work scopes.

A more experienced/qualified individual may also get involved with:
• Generating typical piping calculations i.e. Hoop stress, slug forces, PSV forces and wall thickness calculations.
• Performing Pipe stress and flange leakage calculations using Caesar II software.
• Developing 3D modelling of piping systems using dimensional control surveys.
• Generating Technical design files under the Pressure Equipment Directive.
• Initiating work scopes under the client's management of change system.
• Cost estimating.
• Liaising with Design, Fabrication & Construction Companies.
• Generating work packs.
• Checking and signing off of piping design drawings.
• Organising/Supervising the fabrication & installation of piping work scopes.
• Preparing new piping specifications for approval.
• Ensure all piping modifications are carried out in accordance with PUK & approved National/International standards.
• Interpret 3D modelling of piping systems to produce piping isometrics.

Note: This is a staff developmental position for a piping engineer/draughtsman with either a small or significant amount of previous experience. The value of the reimbursement package will reflect this experience as will the involvement and development of the role for the longer term.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• A proven track record in piping design and drafting works in an industrial set-up.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of relevant national and international piping standards.
• Proven experience and competence in the use of AutoCad.
• Excellent team working skills and a good communicator with the ability to interact with organisational personnel – both staff and contract - at all levels.
• Good time management skills and an ability to plan and organise work activities.
• Knowledge and experience of the safety requirements for working on an industrial site

• Formal relevant qualification in piping design and drafting or engineering (mechanical)
• A minimum of 2-3 years relevant experience in the engineering/construction industry – preferentially, but not essentially in the oil and gas or petro-chemical industry.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
• Knowledge and experience of onshore oil and gas well head and process plant design.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of Permit to Work Systems
• Experience in the generation and use of Task Risk Assessment
• Experience in the use of QA/QC systems such as GOC.
