The Company:
Our client, a major owner/operating company, requires expertise for their ongoing oil sands mega-projects in Alberta.

The Role:
The Piping/Mechanical Engineer is the technical expert on piping and non-rotating mechanical equipment who oversees the Detailed Design Contractor's production of the piping and mechanical deliverables per the Project Design Basis, within project budget and schedule. Assists with all aspects of piping and mechanical equipment selection, design, installation, commissioning, and start-up planning. Facilitates interfaces among Company Functions, and the Detailed Design Contractor's organization with respect to piping and mechanical issues.

Responsibilities and duties:
• Provide overall piping design technical leadership and expertise
• Provide overall mechanical design technical leadership and expertise
• Coordinate Company Facilities engineering team members' involvement in piping/mechanical activities, including interaction with Detailed Design Contractor's piping/mechanical personnel
• Prepare and submit weekly and monthly engineering progress data, including narratives, charts, graphs, etc. on piping/mechanical issues to the Engineering Supervisor Extraction or his designee
• Provide piping/mechanical input for Hazard and Operability (HAZOPS) reviews
• Provide piping/mechanical input for Risk Management activities, as appropriate
• Review Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs) for safe and operable features
• Advise the Detailed Design Contractor's piping and mechanical equipment activities with respect to:
 Development of Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs)
 Equipment data sheet completeness and accuracy
 Piping and mechanical equipment engineering studies and analyses
 Inspection and test plans, including plans for Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Integration Tests (SITs)
 Compliance with design methods and safety factors to be used in design of project
• Steward the Detailed Design Contractor's activities with respect to piping and mechanical engineering execution including:
 Ensuring that all affected parties are familiar with Detailed Design execution plans, procedures, objectives, and job requirements
 Ensuring that the Detailed Design Contractor staffs the project with adequate numbers of qualified personnel
 Ensuring that the Detailed Design Contractor employs the appropriate design tools, including computer hardware and software
 Ensuring that the Detailed Design Contractor adheres to all appropriate specifications and standards
 Ensuring that the Detailed Design Contractor provides all contract documents, including those referred to in the job spec
• Advise the Detailed Design Contractor's piping and mechanical activities with respect to:
 Equipment data sheet completeness and accuracy
 Piping/ Mechanical equipment engineering studies and analyses
 Inspection and test plans, including Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Integration Tests (SITs)
 Compliance with design methods and safety factors to be used in design of project

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Thorough knowledge of:
 Piping design, fabrication, transportation, commissioning, and start-up principles, theories, and concepts
 Mechanical design, fabrication, transportation, commissioning, and start-up principles, theories, and concepts
 Engineering verification and equipment design audit requirements
 Applicable codes, standards, and trade practices (e.g., ASME, API codes and Ceasar II analysis)
• Thorough knowledge and expert judgment in the selection and application of piping and mechanical equipment design analyses hardware and software
• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 15+ years of closely related professional engineering experience, 10+ years of which should be at the Senior Engineer level
• 5+ years as Lead Piping or Mechanical Engineer on a large project or major operating area

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
• Owner/Operating Company experience or equivalent is strongly preferred
• Capable of detailed pipe stress analysis of complex systems
• Capable of developing procedures for testing, installation, commissioning and startup
• Capable of developing requirements for operating, maintenance and inspection procedures
• Capable of verifying work is consistent with good design practices, realistic operating assumptions, and low lifecycle costs
• Capable of developing detailed equipment specifications including pre-commissioning, testing, and assessing vendor qualifications and quality programs
• Capable of selecting optimal metallurgy
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software programs
