The Company:
Our client, a major international energy company with operations in 34 countries and over 30 years of experience in oil & gas production, has an immediate need for Principal Engineer - Water Treatment Facilities.

The Role:
This position is located in Client’s Heavy Oil Technology Centre (HOTC) in Calgary. The mission of HOTC is to execute the research and development required to support Company’s ambition to become a world-leader in environmentally sustainable production of extra heavy oil (EHO). This is being accomplished through close cooperation with Company’s EHO assets, industry partners, universities, research organizations, and technology suppliers to develop, evaluate, test and implement new technology.

The Principal Engineer – Water Treatment and Facilities will be responsible for leading process technology research and development activities related to fulfilling the objectives of Company’s Technology Plan. These objectives include the development and advancement of technology improvements to reduce water use, improve process reliability, reduce energy consumption, better manage process wastes, and reduce capital and operating costs for SAGD. This position will have a focus on water treatment activities although the successful candidate will be expected to also contribute on other R&D initiatives related to SAGD surface facilities.

The selected candidate will be responsible for formulating technology improvement concepts, developing plans for technology evaluation and testing, leading the execution of these activities, and preparing technology evaluation reports. This will involve close collaboration with other R&D colleagues in Canada and Norway, within Client’s Extra Heavy Oil (EHO) producing assets and Projects, and with partners in other energy companies, technology providers and external research organizations.

• Provides close cooperation with Client’s EHO assets to identify business needs that can be addressed through improvements in process technology and actively contributes to the formulation of such technology improvement ideas and concepts
• Leads execution of water technology R&D activities. This includes contributing to the preparation of detailed investigation protocols, coordinating interfaces with assets and research providers, supervising and directly contributing to project execution, providing quality assurance/quality control, analyzing research results and evaluating significance to Company’s business
• Provides responsive technical services to EHO assets to address research needs related to technology qualification and fulfillment of other technical requirements
• Monitors emerging developments in SAGD process technology by cultivating an active network of technology providers, users and researchers; participating in relevant professional technical societies and events; and keeping abreast of the latest published literature
• Performs preliminary business case analyses to quantify the benefits of technology improvement ideas
• Develops plans for evaluation, testing and qualification of technologies from desktop studies through to and including laboratory and bench-scale tests, pilot-scale prototype tests and commercial demonstrations
• Represents Company’s technical and commercial interests in Joint Industry Projects and other collaborative industry forums and organizations
• Communicates results of technology improvement activities and projects through internal and external reports, presentations, and technical publications
• Ensures Company's business processes are followed in the execution of R&D activities by actively collaborating with those responsible for intellectual property rights, commercial/legal issues and procurement activities

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or a related process engineering discipline. An advanced degree with research experience would be beneficial
• Minimum 10 years of post-undergraduate degree experience that could include research, process evaluation, engineering design and/or plant operations with a focus on in-situ heavy oil recovery
• Direct experience and/or a willingness to develop competency in produced water recycling technology for heavy oil production will be an asset

• The candidate must be a self-starter, take initiative and be able to work independently while handling multiple projects concurrently
• Strong interpersonal skills and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.
• Has a strong “customer-service” attitude in providing technical support to assets.
• Is a “hands on”, detail-oriented individual with has strong follow-up skills
• Excellent written and oral command of English, including strong presentation
