The Role:
Lead a team of engineers to provide geotechnical engineering expertise and technical assurance for onshore and offshore structures and facilities. As part of the Projects & Technology (P&T) organisation the civil, structures and offshore engineering team (CSO) in Rijswijk, you will deliver competitive services and projects for our customers in the mainly within the EMEA region. You will also be a leader in the CSO contribution to performance improvements within Shell such as R&D, standardization of designs, simplification of processes and internal and external knowledge sharing.

The CSO team in Rijswijk comprises more than 45 civil, structural and offshore engineers. The civil engineering discipline within P&T covers all civil and structural aspects related to our oil and gas projects. The team members are mostly expected to develop competences in a wide range of the CSO subject matter areas, although the team also includes some deep specialists, including geotechnical engineers.

Your team will carry out and coordinate geotechnical engineering activities for the purpose of concept evaluation, concept definition (FEED), detailed design, construction and asset integrity. You will support customers with technical advice, best Shell and Industry practices and competitive global standards to enable top quartile operating performance.

Principal Accountabilities
1. Enable P&T to deliver onshore and offshore development projects by executing project activities, including conceptual, FEED Design and detailed Design, Construction and Installation.
2. Perform Quality Assurance and Control reviews to ensure the technical integrity, constructability, functionality and reliability of designs.
3. Provide input to the development of project execution contracting strategies that complement designs, construction and operating methods.
4. Manage outsourced work to Engineering Consultants and Contractors.
5. Provide CSO Engineering technical input to P&T business development groups in the Identification, Assessment & Selection of new business opportunities, sustaining the group as the recognised entry point for such service.
6. Identify new technology to overcome new business challenges; working with IRD to formulate project proposals, defining scope of work and participating in development of technical solutions.
7. Leading the update of Standards, Tools and Guidelines within own area of expertise.

As Principal Geotechnical Engineer you will report to the Regional Team Lead and work primarily within the EMEA regional P&ES project and customer portfolio. You will have experienced professionals and junior engineers reporting to you and for whom you will act as a coach and supervisor. As a geotechnical subject matter expert, you will lead in the sharing of knowledge and development best practice through internal and external networking and coaching and master classes.

P&T and P&ES are committed to the delivery of Projects and Services within budget and schedule, and in line with HSE and quality assurance targets. Staff are expected to be highly motivated, resourceful and able to work seamlessly as team members under considerable time pressures. The challenges include need for excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster a framework of trust within a multi-discipline or project environment; plus proactive and performance driven behaviours.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Qualifications: As a minimum BSc or equivalent in civil or offshore engineering, with a higher-level degree in geotechnical or foundation engineering preferred. A professional qualification will also be an advantage.

Experience: Minimum of 15 years experience in geotechnical, civil and/or offshore engineering, preferably within the Oil & Gas industry including international work in projects consistent with the status of a recognized subject matter expert in the geotechnical engineering and foundation design aspects preferably of both onshore facilities and fixed/floating offshore structures.

Experience of working within the opportunity realisation process, effective collaboration in multi-discipline teams and in working with and supporting operating assets including brownfield development is highly desirable.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
Professional and technical competences should include the following based upon both the civil & structural and offshore structures job competency profile:

Onshore geotechnics and foundations – Mastery
Offshore geotechnics and foundations - Mastery
A minimum of Skill in all of the following with Mastery in 3
• Civil maintenance and integrity
• Civil infrastructure (site preparation and/or earth works, drainage, roads and paving)
• Steel and concrete structures
• Buildings
• Coastal marine structures (jetties, dredging, breakwaters etc)
• Fixed offshore structures
• Moorings and turrets
Minimum HSSE Management should be as follows
• Provide Leadership in HSSE - skill
• Prepare Effective Management of HSSE Risk - skill
• Apply Effective Management of HSSE Risk - skill
