The Company:
Our client is one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of professional technical services. They offer full-spectrum support to industrial, commercial, and government clients across multiple markets. Services include scientific and specialty consulting as well as all aspects of engineering and construction, and operations and maintenance.

The Role:
• Lead functional input to own projects, including where relevant leading the input of other (possibly multidisciplinary) engineers and subcontractors, to ensure engineering delivery meets scope, time, cost and quality
• Plan and prioritise own work and that of more junior staff so that parallel activities are all completed in a timely manner
• Carry out engineering calculations and check the work of more junior staff to delivery a quality functional input to projects
• Generate and check engineering estimates and execution strategies to provide optimal solutions and eliminate errors
• Manage suppliers to ensure cost effective, timely delivery
• Proactively generate value adding options within projects to offer to clients to improve both the chance of winning work and satisfaction with completed and ongoing work
• Provide functional support and guidance to more junior staff to develop both them as individuals and the capability of the team as a whole
• Keep abreast of current technology so that technical input to projects takes account of new developments

• Support the engineering discipline manager in non project based activities such as writing procedures, resource planning, establishing policy, budgeting, recruitment etc, to support the drive to continuously improve and optimise the operation of the department

Essential:

• Professionally qualified (eg Chartered) Engineer
• Substantial relevant experience, typically at least 10 years of experience in relevant project design work
• Team leadership capability
• Excellent technical skills
• Site based experience
• Competent in project management
• Commercial awareness

Preferred:
• Experience in contracting environment

• Mobility and flexibility to work anywhere in home country essential
• Potential for worldwide assignments

• Functional lead on projects up to £30million cost
• Leads project team of up to 15 junior engineers
• Works within client procedures

• Addresses and resolves any functional issues within a project through use of technical capability, commercial and engineering judgement, applying own or colleagues skills or generating innovative solutions as appropriate
• Addresses and resolves any potential failure on time / cost / quality in the engineering execution of a project

• Makes all routine discipline engineering delivery decisions for the project on own authority.
• Requests resources from manager as required to meet the discipline engineering deliverables

• Refers to engineering discipline manager for discussion and approval of overrun or overspend.

The role has a high level of immediate impact on the successful or otherwise completion of a project. The unique understanding of the discipline elements of the project and the factors influencing its delivery means that a failure in this area is highly likely to result in project problems.


Has to communicate effectively in verbal and written format at all levels, including project documentation for clients, project reporting and day to day discussion of tasks with engineers and others

Communicates complex technical information accurately and clearly.
