The Company:
Our client is a nuclear specialist, covering both civilian and defence sectors, across the complete lifecycle from New Build, through Operations and Maintenance, to final decommissioning and waste disposal.

The Role:
1. Main purpose of job
• As a senior member of the Engineering Design Management Team, you will manage multi-discipline engineering resources to ensure design delivery to projects and adherence to design processes and standards.
• The Principal Engineer is principally a design delivery role from a technical perspective working across a multi-disciplined design team. The Principal Engineer is usually responsible for delivering the design within their own discipline with frequent liaison / management of engineers within the design team from other disciplines. The Principal Engineer also provides technical guidance and imparts knowledge to Senior Engineers, Lead Engineers, Design engineers, Graduates and Designers.

2. Position in organisation and key relationships
• Responsible for line management of discipline grouping of up to 75 staff.
• Delivery of all design and engineering to meet the requirements of the Concept Design Review & Preliminary Design Review.
• Responsible for managing the quality, and progress of work carried out within the project.
• Definition and distribution of the scope of work to ensure that all work is executed safely, on time and at appropriate levels of quality.
• Ensuring that all design work is delivered in accordance with the Project Procedures.
• On behalf of the Engineering Manager carry out interviews for Senior/Lead/Design Engineers.
3. Scope of job

• Develop and reinforce the safety culture
• Governance of the Mechanical deliverables
• Checking/Approval of documents and drawings
• Regularly interacts with clients and managers of other engineering disciplines
• Compliance with safety regulations (e.g. CDM and CE marking)
• Develop cost effective technical solutions
• Leading the team to effectively meet customer needs
• Guiding technical solutions
• Experience in the application of Safety Related Systems to mechanical design
• Supporting the Engineering Manager in the communication of best practices across the design delivery team.

4. Dimensions and limits of authority
• Direct Management and integration of engineering designs within the discipline team.
• Allocation of work to resources across the designated systems to optimise the delivery of the works.
• Responsibility for design delivery within projects where design budget may be up to £10M.
• Approval of Engineering Design input to bids up to £2.5M.
• Making Principle technical contribution for winning over £250k
5. Personal Profile Qualifications
Essential:
• Degree Qualified in a relevant technical / engineering discipline.
• Full Membership of a discipline specific institution (e.g. I MechE; I Structural Eng; IChemE etc).
• Registered Chartered status in discipline specific Engineering Council.
Desirable:
• Fellow of a discipline specific institution (e.g. I MechE; I Structural Eng; IChemE etc).
6. Personal Profile –Experience
Essential:
• >10 years’ experience in a senior role in the management and delivery of the design of process / materials handling plants preferably in the nuclear environment, or other equivalent highly regulated industry
• High knowledge of Statutory and Safety Regulations and their appropriate utilisation.
• Proven track record of successfully delivering design solutions.
• Management of discipline specific engineering and design teams.
Desirable:
• Expert in Nuclear Industry.
7. Personal Profile – Capability / Competency levels required
Essential:
• High level of commercial awareness.
• Ability in the leadership of a technical team within a project delivery environment. Organisation and collaboration skills when working to difficult project deadlines.
• Proven track record within a complex project environment with strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
Desirable:
• Development of capability statement for the preparation of Bid Returns during Tendering stage.

Design
• Set standards and parameters

• Agree changes with project manager and customer
• Commissioning strategy, operator training , and implementation
Technical Consultancy
• Carry out assessments as a Technical Professional to give independent advice
Design Team / Budget Management
• Produce cost estimate, resource plan and project programme
• Set up team and obtain resources
• Supervise the design team and interface with the customer
• Monitor rate of expenditure and commitment, compare with plan and take corrective action (in agreement with the Project Manager).
• Track progress against programme and take corrective action (in agreement with project manager)
• Produce periodic progress reports , control processes needed to achieve deliverables
• Approval of technical specifications and reports
• Review of all engineering documentation
• Approval of risk assessments, CDM H&S File, Technical File and other technical documentation required by safety legislation and procedures
Sales Support and Customer Care
• Ensuring product meets customer requirements
• Ensure any variations to the work are identified and agreed
• Interaction with customers to develop business opportunities
• Preparation of proposals/tender submissions for new work
• Maintaining and improving customer relations
• Identifying new customer/work opportunities to Line Manager(s) and S&M Team
Management Contractors and Sub-Contractors
• Identify need for sub-contractor, draw up specification and tender documents
• Review and accept sub-contractors work
• Monitor and review contractor’s performance
Manage Safety
• Enforcement of CDM regulations
• DJRs and ESRs as required
• Contributes to Safety Cases
• Supports construction team on site. % Importance

Special features of job

• Work on clients’ sites as required, which may involve working away from home for extended periods, possibly overseas.

• High level of flexibility required and willingness to work away in Japan for a couple weeks at a time
