The Company:
Our client is a nuclear specialist, covering both civilian and defence sectors, across the complete lifecycle from New Build, through Operations and Maintenance, to final decommissioning and waste disposal.

The Role:
Working Hours: 37.5 hrs/week
Reporting to: Engineering Manager as line manager. Design Manager / Principal Engineer / Project Manager on project deliverables.

Role Overview:
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is principally a design delivery role from a technical perspective working across a multi-disciplined design team. The Senior Engineer is usually responsible for delivering the design within their own discipline with frequent liaison / management of engineers within the design team from other disciplines. The Senior Engineer also provides technical guidance and imparts knowledge to Lead Engineers, Design Engineers, Graduates and Designers.

Development of designs to satisfy technical specifications
Checking and approving design calculations of designers and other engineers within the team
Probable lead of design reviews, safety reviews (risk assessments/ HAZOP’s) from technical standpoint within discipline
Close liaison with client and project team to prepare technical specifications for the design
Ensure quality and delivery of design documentation throughout the design process including scope of works, method statements, risk assessments, technical files and other technical documentation to comply with design standards, safety legislation/regulatory requirements and the needs of the client
Management of installation, commissioning and operating documents
Allocation of work to other members of team in order to ensure delivery of design to quality, time and budget
Selection, strategy and management of work to sub-contractors

Future possible progression:
A typical path is to develop to Principal Engineer, Design Manager or Project Manager upon satisfactory experience, proven capability, qualifications and client acceptance.

Continued Professional Development/Training:
The company encourages CPD. There is a structured approach for employees to gain Chartered status. Other accreditations can be supported also. The principle adopted is that professional development is intended to improve the effectiveness of the individual’s ability to do their job.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Degree qualified in a relevant technical / engineering discipline is essential.
Chartered Engineer status is normal for this position and is largely driven by client expectations however this is not always a limiting factor and candidates nearing chartership are eligible.
Membership to appropriate institutions is preferred e.g. CIBSE, MIMechE.
A full UK drivers licence is essential for this position as travelling between offices may be required.
Demonstrable competence gained in a design delivery position within a project based environment
Experience in the nuclear sector is essential.
Technical experience could be gained from but is not limited to precision engineering, conveyer systems, remote handling systems / equipment, heavy engineering, cranes, pipes and pumps.
Experience of incell piping or grout plant delivery would be a distinct advantage.
