The Company:
Our client is the largest refinery in Europe and one of the largest refineries in the world. The site offers, next to oil processing factories, housing to chemical plants and other businesses. In short: a large and important industrial site within the area of the Port of Rotterdam

The Role:
Process engineer with experience in relief scenario determination and safety valve sizing calculations.

Job description
The location is a complex refining and chemical facility consisting of 60-70 process units. Every unit is equipped with a safeguarding memorandum (SGM) specifying and describing relief scenarios, relief valve sizing and ultimate safeguarding. The update, modification and periodical review of these documents is part of a SGM plan.
The Incumbent will be dedicated to the modification and update of SGM’s and identified shortfalls for the existing units and flare system documentation to the latest requirements.

Able to write Safeguarding Memorandum using process engineering flow schemes, process control and safeguarding narratives. Proven experience having set-up SGM documentation from scratch.
Able to review the quality and completeness of existing safeguarding memoranda. Able to pinpoint problem areas and find creative solutions.

Core activities
• Determine and validate failure scenarios.
• Safety valve sizing and selection for single and double phase scenarios.
• Pressure drop calculations over piping systems taking into account CV calculations, isometrics etc.
• Able to use process simulator ProII to perform flash calculations, and more complex simulations
• Experience with physical properties of crude oil components and mixtures thereof

Having knowledge of applicable standards (API/RTOD/PED) in the chemical industry, knowledge specifically with the clients internal standard DEP would be an advantage
Proven experience on writing Safeguarding Memoranda.
Additional experience in the determination of design temperature conditions would be desirable

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Academic thinking and working level
“VCA-vol” qualification is a requirement before starting activities
Previous experience on process engineering, writing safeguarding memoranda and similar documentation
Physical condition of the Incumbent should be such that all visible and audible warning signals can be detected.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
Confident process engineer with trust in own capacity, quality and process insight
Communicative skills in communication with Operations, Technology, Inspection and clients are essential for a successful execution of the job.
Able to creatively solve identified shortfalls, minimizing hardware changes (out of the box)
Independent and pro-active process engineer, able to find his/her way in a complex refinery environment.
• Able to independently go into the plant to verify actual construction and line-up of process systems. Regular plant visits form integrated part of the activity.
• Resilient and persistent with regards to obtaining process information from different sources in an environment governed by priorities.
Proficient and flexible with IT systems and software
