The Role:
Our client is seeking an energetic accounting professional to join their financial team. Working with the Accounting/Procurement & Contracts Manager, the Project Accountant will provide financial stewardship and accounting support to the multi-billion dollar Long Harbour Processing Plant construction project.

The incumbent will implement effective financial controls in accordance with GAAP/IFRS and Company standards that will ensure the provision of accurate and timely expenditure information. The Project Accountant will also maintain cash forecasts, develop asset capitalization procedures and ensure efficient payment process cycle.

This is a Fixed Term position based in St. John’s with occasional day trips to Long Harbour; the term is expected to end in February 2013.

- Responsible for day-to-day project accounting, including expenditure reports and variance analysis, cash management, indirect taxes, account reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, insurance, letters of credit and ad-hoc reporting.
- Maintain detailed auditable project accounting records in accordance with corporate procedures, maintenance of month-end close-out binder/checklist; analyze expenditure/performance reports and metrics.
- Prepare cash forecasts and monitor performance against key performance indicators. Perform assessments of the Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management (EPCM) contract administration procedures.
- Review contractor service and equipment package milestone invoices prior to approval; ensure EPCM/the client's invoice verification procedures are appropriate to detect billing issues prior to payment; maintain pro-forma invoice statistics.
- Provide guidance on corporate governance matters including interpretation of delegation of authority guidelines.
- Provide advise to support the decision making process within the various project teams.
- Assist with the development and implementation of effective internal controls and procedures consistent with corporate policies.
- Assist with the development of the capitalization strategy for capital project closeout.
- Develop and monitor key payment performance indicators and statistics.
- Assist troubleshooting Oracle process issues
- Assist with special projects.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Post Secondary Degree in Accounting or a related field.
- CMA, CGA or CA designation is a strong asset.

- Minimum of 2 years Accountant experience

Knowledge and Skills:
- Comfort in working in highly computerized environment.
- Strong knowledge of Oracle or equivalent, i.e. SAP.
- Intermediate level skill with MS Office, specifically Excel (pivot tables).
- Sound knowledge of general accounting, internal control principles and construction cost control reporting processes.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills to evaluate alternatives and provide recommendations on business issues.
- Well developed written and oral communication skills to interface effectively with all levels of project team and external contacts.
- Ability to work within a collaborative team environment.
