The Role:
The primary purpose of this position is to help the client partners appropriately quantify and manage the reactive chemical hazards associated with their facilities by
• Performing calculations and
• Database searches and/or
• Designing experiments (guided by thermodynamic principles and plant operating conditions),
• Performing data interpretation, and
• Providing consulting support.

The person shall have a knowledge base and/or experience with the process chemistries associated with the site.
This support is accomplished through predictive techniques along with the design and oversight of experimental studies in reactivity and thermal stability (testing done either internally or through outsourcing) and the evaluation/interpretation of data generated by such studies.
In addition, the SME is responsible for the application of thermodynamic and kinetic data and principles to process scenarios to minimize the risk of runaway reactions, fires or explosions in processes with the purpose of defining a safe operating envelope for the process. The SME will partner with Process Safety personnel to engage in the identification and analysis of worst case scenarios and participate in root cause investigations of reactive chemicals incidents/accidents. The SME will be an active member of the Reactive Chemicals discipline and the site Reactive Chemicals Committee, providing general reactive chemical support to clients (e.g., participation in RCPHA reviews). Understanding of chemical synthesis/reaction mechanisms is required. Experience in kinetic modelling and calorimetry is desirable.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is required and Chemical Engineering is preferred.
• Extensive Manufacturing, Tech Center, or Engineering experience preferred.
• General knowledge of EH&S and in-depth knowledge of Process Safety discipline.
• Successful candidates in this role have come from a variety of backgrounds, including run plant engineers, business tech centres, process development, and R&D labs. Familiarity with the Reactive Chemicals Program is desirable but not required. Experienced personnel within the Reactive Chemicals discipline can train a motivated, team-oriented candidate to become highly successful in the role. Strong communication skills in English are critical to this role.
