The Role:
This is a chance to work with one of the industries leading experts in Space Tribology (Friction, lubrication) and winner of the prestigious Donald Julius Groen Prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). As Research & Design Engineer / R&D Engineer - Tribology (Friction, lubrication) you’ll work within Research & Development and test activities department in the field of Space Tribology. Opportunities for international exposure and presentations of your work.

As Research & Design Engineer / R&D Engineer - Tribology (Friction, lubrication) your main duties will involve:
• You’ll devise, plan and undertake laboratory-based, tribology-related projects
• Interpreting experimental data and prepare reports of the findings of each projects
• Prepare cost estimates and proposals, quotes, and support documentation.
• Liaise with the client; presenting findings at client meetings and at conferences
• To collaborate with management to prepare proposals of work to be undertaken on space Tribology activities.
• Liaising with the design engineering personnel on rig or component design requirements
• Identification and procurement of parts, equipment or other items necessary for undertaking each job
• Setting-up of test rigs and equipment in clean room
• Undertaking of tests and preparation of test reports

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
As a Research & Design Engineer / R&D Engineer - Tribology you will have experience:
• Knowledge of Tribology / Interest in Friction / lubrication / Materials / Metallurgy
• Experience of hardware testing/development/engineering research
• Confident in data reduction, analysis and presentation.
• Experience of precision mechanical components
• Understanding of vacuum systems – Desirable
• Genuine enthusiasm for space and space technology
• Degree qualified in Astrophysics, Physics, Maths, Mechanical, Aerospace or other relevant scientific discipline. PhD would be an advantage but not essential
• Able to demonstrate sound experimental technique and evidence of analysing data and providing an explanation or recommendation
