The Role:
Upstream Development Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist with focus on Mammalian Cell Culture

Job Overview
• A research scientist / senior research scientist position is available within the Upstream Development team preferably with a focus on Mammalian Cell Culture (MCC). A highly motivated individual is sought to join a group of scientists working to develop recombinant protein processes suitable for the manufacture of biotherapeutics.

• The successful candidate will be laboratory-based and, working as part of a team, will be involved in cell line development (CLD; from transfection, cloning and selection of cell lines to evaluation of clonal cell lines in scale-down mimics of the production process) and / or process development (PD; from scale down mimics to pilot scale bioreactors), dependent on experience. They will also have a role to play in contributing to the implementation of new and innovative ways of working.

• Future opportunity to be cross trained in microbial fermentation or MCC depending on previous experience

Education and Experience
• Biochemical Engineering or a life science degree (BSc / BEng / MSc / MEng) with relevant biotech/biopharmaceutical industry experience preferably within a mammalian cell culture role

Technical Skills Requirements
• Knowledge of microbial expression cell systems / mammalian cell line expression platforms and / or process development strategies

• Practical experience in aseptic technique, microbial systems and / or mammalian cell culture (ideally CHO based) methods
o Experience of transfection / transformation / cloning techniques and / or operation and control of stirred tanks or fermenters, laboratory scale (1-10L) micro / mammalian cell culture bioreactors a plus

• Ability to communicate the progress of projects, both verbally using presentations and with written reports, to both internal and external customers

Other Competencies
• Ensure a high standard of science and quality of work are maintained

• Contribute to the efficient running of the laboratory functional activities

• Interface with all Upstream Process Development streams within the UK and with Upstream Process Development streams at our sister site in the USA
