The Role:
Position reports to: Senior / Lead / Chief Safety and Risk Engineer

Primary Objective
• To undertake risk & safety related projects as required by the Company workload.
• To execute project work with guidance/supervision and taking an active role in the technical development of the work.

Specific accountabilities
• To identify the safety engineering scope of work from basis of design.
• Development of design and operational engineering studies in the areas of risk, safety and loss prevention.
• Quality Assurance – Responsible for working within the provisions and guidelines of the Quality Assurance system.

Essential skills/experience
• Relevant engineering degree.
• 3-5 years experience in the field of safety & risk engineering in the offshore oil & gas industry.
• Good understand of the primary hazards and how to apply a formalised approach of hazard management to identify and provide means of mitigation and reduction of such hazards.
• Technical writing skills to produce Formal Safety Assessments (FERA, EERA, ESSA, Dropped Object, etc.)
• Use of consequence modelling software such as Shell FRED, BP CIRRUS and DNV PHAST.
• Use of QRA Spreadsheets, parts count methodology, frequency and event tree analysis and how to interpret the results to present a formal report.

Key Result Areas
• Meet the Team Leaders/Lead Engineers requirements in terms of completing a task to the agreed budget and programme and to the right quality and standard.
• Maximise profitability of own work by ensuring that it is carried out efficiently and effectively and that it is ‘right first time’.
• Identifies risks associated with own work and reports to Team Leader/Lead Engineer as necessary.
• Ensures that own work is being carried out in accordance with the company Enterprise Management System (EMS).
• Develops and maintain a good working relationship with Clients, when appropriate, to ensure that their needs are met.

Problem Solving
• Day to day problem solving is around technical issues and, generally in discussion with immediate supervisor.
• Suggests and develops solutions to technical problems in discussion with immediate supervisor prior to implementation.
• Understands when to seek advice from Lead Engineer/Team Leader on the solution of a technical problem and does this in a timely manner before it can compromise the project objectives.

Planning, Organising and Control
• Clearly understands and follows task/subtask breakdown, budget and programme generally developed by others.
• Plans own tasks on a day to day basis.
• Continuously monitors progress against own tasks and reports to Team Leader/Lead Engineer in advance, of any potential problems.
• Follows the corporate Enterprise Management System (EMS) and relevant procedures.

Communicating and Influencing
• Effectively communicates progress and discusses technical requirements or queries with Team Leader/Lead Engineer.
• Produces high quality technical report that can put into context and describe complex technical work in a clear and concise manner.
• Can confidently assist in the presentation of technical issues in meetings or in making presentations to Clients.
• May be involved in dialogue with the client to get feedback on performance, to understand issues and clarify requirements.

Managing, Supervising and Working with others
• Must be able to work effectively both as an individual and as a member of team.
• Be able to provide technical guidance/supervision/training to less experienced staff on a day-today basis, across a range of different areas within own discipline.
• Be able to assist in the motivation, development and training of less experienced staff.

Commercial Orientation
• Understand the broader business context and own role in contributing to its success.
• Ensure that they and those being supervised clearly understand the scope of work, budget and programme associated with their work.
• Are aware of the consequences of own action and the actions of those being supervised on the business profitability, client satisfaction and the possible future work from clients.
• Understands how their work fits in within the overall project and leads to the solution of the Client’s problems.
• Can produce ‘fit for purpose’ deliverables to the client satisfaction.
• Identifies and ensures that any variation to won scope of work/programme is brought to the attention of the Project Manager/Lead Engineer.
• Assist in the preparation of a variety of works.
• Looks out and assists in the development of opportunities for further work/new business.
