The Role:
The primary purpose of this role is to both contribute to and lead the software development activities on projects, focussing initially on particular projects in the Operations & Systems theme. Our activities are organised into project teams and for this role you will be working with a Project Manager, Product Technical Lead and project software development & testing team, where you will be responsible for ensuring that the development team implements the system requirements to an agreed design, with responsibility for the quality of the outputs and the efficiency of the delivery activities. You will need to demonstrate superlative technical skills, clear ownership and responsibility for the development decisions, and the ability to motivate the team (which would likely comprise both permanent and contract staff) and drive through delivery in accordance with those decisions.
For this role it is essential that the individual has extensive experience of C# technologies as the initial work will include substantive hands-on personal involvement in design and coding activities alongside the lead duties; in order to maximise future flexibility across our product portfolio, knowledge of Java technologies would also be preferable. Experience of delivering high-availability high-reliability systems in control environments (preferably in sectors such as transport, utilities, logistics or defence) including performance tuning would be desirable. High standards of quality are essential, and we are looking for an individual who is self-motivated and tenacious, strongly process-orientated, attentive to detail and able to grasp the business concepts involved quickly in a challenging environment.

 Implement developments in accordance with the business and technical requirements, specifications and quality standards
 Take development decisions and communicate decisions and technical constraints to the project team and other relevant stakeholders
 Provide technical leadership, and guide & drive the project team to deliver solutions in line with the defined design/architecture
 Review and assess impact of proposed scope changes to current solutions
 Involvement in full lifecycle software application design and development
 Active engagement with peers in design/development reviews
 Ability to accurately estimate packages of work, and subsequently deliver to deadline and budget

Experience and Knowledge
 Evidence of analytical ability with attention to detail and quality
 Broad understanding of all stages of systems development and service delivery
 Demonstrates good inter-personal skills
 Communicates persuasively and demonstrates the ability to make development-related decision
 Experience of delivering high-availability high-reliability systems in control environments with particular emphasis on systems which are scalable, highly performant, and designed to security and safety requirements
 Experience gained with transport, rail or software house organisations beneficial
Technical / Function Skills
Primary requirement
 Must offer strong C# development experience
 Experience and ability to create software design specifications
 Strong web service experience in a service oriented architecture
 Web/web service security knowledge desirable (digital certificates/message signing)
 Working on a mix of both existing and new .NET development solutions.
 Visual Studio 2012/2013 preferred.
 Windows platform; Oracle / SQL Server databases
 Knowledge of Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) highly desirable
 VB6 experience would be advantageous, but not essential.
Future flexibility
 Knowledge of OOAD, JSE and JEE programming
 Proficient in Linux
 Knowledge of real-time systems (for example, in a safety or military context) and performance tuning
