The Company:
Our Client’s engineering division, has been a leader in the design of drilling facilities for offshore platforms worldwide for over 30 years. The company’s 700-strong workforce provides a range of engineering services from pre-project and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) through detail design, construction support, hook-up and commissioning.

Job Title:
Discipline Designer

Reports To:
Lead Discipline Designer

Purpose Of Job:
Preparation of design deliverables for allocated jobs/projects

Area(s) of Responsibility:
Fitness for purpose of designs within own area of responsibility.
Delivery to schedule.
Delivery to budget.

Supervises:
May supervise other designers for particular jobs/projects.

Key Tasks:
a) Knowledge of, and compliance with, clients Management Systems.
b) Knowledge of, and compliance with, client industry and international
specifications and standards.
c) Supervision of Discipline Designers under own control, and for the quality of work
produced by these discipline personnel.
d) Production of cost effective design solutions that are fit for purpose, safe and add
value to the Client. Motivation of discipline personnel
allocated to own area of responsibility to do similarly.
e) Originating design documentation for allocated workscopes, eg drawings,
sketches and bills of materials, and checking similar documentation created by
others.
f) Ensuring operational and maintenance personnel and, if beneficial, carrying out
presentations to site personnel of changes to their installation.
g) Surveys, both onshore and offshore, to determine information to allow execution
of workscopes.
h) Raising requisitions for purchase of engineered items and services, as directed by
the Lead Discipline Designer.
i) Inspections of onshore procured materials and fabrications, as required.
j) Execution of work within manhour budget and time schedule.
k) Early identification to the Lead Discipline Designer of areas of concern during the
course of any project or study with necessary corrective action identified.
l) Identification of increase or reduction in scope of work and advising the Lead
Discipline Designer accordingly.
m) Following discipline procedures for document control and use and retention of
check prints/IDC comments prints as directed by the Lead Discipline Designer.
n) Representation of Clients and Suppliers/Vendors in a
professional manner.

Primary Responsibilities:
Safety
Use of safe approach in design and working practices, following the objectives of the Office and project specific Health, Safety and Environmental Plans. Encouragement of attention to safety in personnel allocated to own area of responsibility.

Financial
Awareness and understanding of the business drivers within the Client relationship and how these can be influenced by innovative designs and fit-for-purpose solutions.


Business Development
a) Development of good working relationship with Client and site personnel.
b) Use of opportunities at meetings with Clients, Vendors etc to learn of additional
work which the client could undertake and to promote capabilities.
c) During surveys and site visits, communication with Operations and Maintenance
personnel to determine any opportunities where the client could provide an
engineering solution to existing problems or for improving the existing practice.

Departmental Development
Liaison with the Lead Discipline Designer to identify areas for development and to implement improvements in working practices.

Systems and Processes
Provision of information as required by the client systems.

People
Assistance with development of Trainee Discipline Designers and Graduate Discipline Engineers.

Quality
• Adherence to the clients QMS.
• Keeping up to date with technical developments, client, national and international standards and legislative requirements related to the role.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Relevant degree
Drilling facilities design experience
Design and AutoCad drawing of SLD's , schematics, interconnects
Production of design schedules for DB's, lighting, bulks, weight control etc
