The Role:
Our client seeks a self motivated, team oriented senior exploration geophysicist charged with evaluating and recommending acreage for exploration. For captured licenses, the geophysicist will be responsible for the design and execution of exploration campaigns. The team is located in North West greater London and reports to the Manager West Africa in the Global Exploration Division.

Responsibilities:

• Safety and Environment - Role models compliance with HSE policy. Ensures that all activities are planned and conducted in compliance with HSE policy.
• Leadership – Communicates effectively and consistently role models Nexen’s values. Readily accepts accountability and insists on it from others.
• Technical Responsibilities:
• Working closely with a geologist, the geophysicist ranks exploration areas based on regional petroleum systems mapping and well success/failure analysis.
• Recommends acquisition and/or purchase of geophysical data, including 2D and 3D seismic and potential fields data for regional assessment and prospect maturation
• Evaluates new opportunities through bid rounds, data room visits and meetings with national and international oil companies
• Works with contractors and Nexen specialists to design, contract and execute geophysical acquisition programs and processing
• Carefully analyses and ties existing well control to 2D and 3D seismic
• Independently interprets and maps 2D and 3D seismic and well data
• Builds seismic velocity models to convert time horizons to depth
• Models wells and analyses seismic attributes to address reservoir and charge risks
• Provides regional context for prospects by monitoring industry activity and performing analogue studies
• Assesses prospect merits by estimating probabilistic hydrocarbon resource and evaluating risk of source, charge, reservoir, trap, seal, and hydrocarbon preservation, within the
context of Nexen’s Exploration and Appraisal Process Guidelines.
• Works with engineers and economists to integrate production profiles, capital and operating cost estimates into a final economic assessment.
• Presents prospects to Nexen’s Peer Review Team, Management and Partners with clear recommendations to acquire, drop, farm out, or test the prospect. These presentations
often require International travel at short notice.
• Working closely with a geologist, reservoir and drilling engineers, the geophysicist will recommend a final drilling location, generate a well prognosis, participate in the drilling risk
assessment, and recommend a well data acquisition program
• Participation in multi-disciplinary team managing exploratory well drilling operations for the recommended prospect and evaluation of results, which may require being on call for
critical periods in the well.
• In addition to technical tasks for several prospects as outlined above, the geophysicist may be assigned administrative functions for one or more of Nexen’s licences. This role
will include partner, government and contractor communication, participation in annual budget planning and approvals, management of Technical Committee Meetings and
participation in overall project planning.
• Participation in Peer Reviews as required for prospects in other Nexen Divisions
• Provide mentorship to more junior earth scientists
• Collaboration – Collaborates effectively with other teams, and actively encourages individuals to build networks, share knowledge and participate in joint problem solving
activities.
• Continuous Improvement & Innovation – Manages work in line with Nexen project disciplines and takes every opportunity to consider alternative solutions in the light of lessons
learned. Enforces the effective use of knowledge databases.

individuals and demonstrates and personal commitment to lifelong leaning

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Significant experience of working as a geophysicist in the oil and gas industry, including generation, maturation, recommendation and drilling of exploration prospects.
• Previous Atlantic margin experience in a variety of structural and stratigraphic play types, particularly in deep water, is very much preferred.
• A generalist, with skills in integrating diverse geological and geophysical data (e.g., well, structural, geochemical, biostratigraphic, seismic, potential fields etc).
• Particular expertise in one or more topics such as seismic attribute analysis, seismic processing, AVO, etc.
• The capability to create basin-scale and prospect-scale assessments, and to make technically and economically valid recommendations.
• Ability to deliver evaluations and recommendations under time constraints, from scoping (hours/days) to detailed analyses (weeks/months).
• Proficient using PC and UNIX/LINUX applications (Seisworks, Petrosys, Petrel, Syntool, GeoProbe, Hampson Russell,
