The Role:
Provide technical guidance and support to the Metrology Technicians in the measurement of Automotive Components & Vehicle Systems using Group best practices methods to ensure that customer's needs are met
Responsible for planning, scheduling and performing measurement activity through the area & prioritising the Metrology Technicians workload accordingly
Point of technical reference on all queries relating to measurement; methods, principles and standards

Key Responsibilities
Arrange and roll out training based on MBO requirements for the Senior Metrology Technician and Metrology Technician roles, in line with Group standards
Provide technical guidance and support in the selection and use of the most appropriate measurement equipment / methods and provide technical input for benchmarking and justification for the purchase of new Metrology equipment
Act as a customer interface and offer technical guidance to ensure that customer needs are met
Convey all technical requirements to the Metrology Technician to ensure that the requested data can be obtained. Check and release measurement reports in accordance to agreed Group standard
Responsible for travelling to external suppliers to assist in measurement and analysis activities
Manage workload and throughput within the area, prioritising where required
Maintain electronic measurement request system and release data to relevant customers
Ensure that all documents are stored in a standardised format / location to TS16949
Control and schedule the build of parts / fixtures to allow for measurement and evaluation of components / systems in line with Group standards
Responsible for identifying and documenting potential concerns and cascading information to relevant owner
Co-ordinate / schedule maintenance and calibration of all OEM equipment in line with TS16949 guidelines
Responsible for cleanliness of all equipment and workspaces to departmental guidelines

The completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship

BTEC ONC or HNC in an Engineering discipline

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) Training level 1 & 2

Previous Experience

Comprehensive knowledge of Group standard processes
Previous experience of interpreting engineering drawings
Previous experience in the use of metrology equipment
Experience in calibration
Must be Team player who is able to interact with colleagues at all levels
Must be able to communicate technical information at an applicable level both internally and externally
An ability to prioritise and plan workload, to work without supervision with flexibility in work patterns
A willingness and ability to travel occasionally as required


Practical understanding of engineering drawings
Expert knowledge in the use of contact and non-contact metrology equipment
Knowledge of quality tools
Understanding of Surface finish and surface texture measurement
Statistic's knowledge preferred
Strong CMM machine knowledge and operation - including offline program generation - beneficial
Shaft Measurement system knowledge preferred
Form and contour measuring system knowledge preferrable
The knowledge of or previous experience in CAS software
Comprehensive computer literacy - Microsoft Excel, Word etc
Comprehensive knowledge of Catia + KVS
Comprehensive knowledge of GD&T (Geometric, Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
Comprehensive knowledge of Metromec
Comprehensive knowledge of Polyworks
Comprehensive knowledge ofg Powerinspect & GOMinspect
An understanding of project management would be beneficial
Exposure to analysis tools such as 8D, 5-Why, Six Sigma, fishbone etc.
Working knowledge of a standards room/calibration clean room environment - ie temperature and humidity controlled area.
