The Role:
Main Goals and Objectives

To provide a range of H&S services to the assigned business areas ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and standards to effect an improvement in H&S performance through safe working methods and environments. Recognised as a topic expert in one or more areas of H&S specialist areas

Main Responsibilities

Assist assigned areas in the reporting, investigation and follow up of all incidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses

•Coordinating the reporting, documentation, investigation and follow up
•Respond to incidents, advising on root cause analysis and corrective actions
•Maintain the database of accidents and ensure sign off
•Produce reports on a monthly basis for assigned areas

Support the business in the assessment of risk

•Scrutinise, coach and develop assessors and line managers competency and risk appreciation
•Provide practical input in respect to complex, specialist or high hazard activities
•Evaluate risk controls and recommend improvement to reduce exposure/risk
•Conduct technical risk assessments (noise, HACS, WAH, confined spaces, etc.) as required in the assigned areas and ensure findings and recommendations are highlighted especially any major areas of concern or improvements
•Provide advice and support to managers on how to reduce exposure/risk
•Where necessary enforce a requirement or prevent an activity from taking place
•Ensure the designated areas are legally compliant to all relevant legislation

Provide support in the development and delivery of H&S related training

•Develop and deliver H&S related training (to include induction) as required
•Ensure training records are suitably maintained
•Develop and maintain a training matrix for the assigned areas using the areas risk assessment and legislation

Review/approve (using H&S risk based criteria) requests for capital expenditure and new equipment providing advice and guidance

•Review capital expenditure projects for compliance with safety requirements and advise accordingly to ensure there is a firm commitment to include safety adequately
•Review proposals for new equipment in assigned areas and advise on safety considerations
•Review equipment for safety compliance post commissioning

Play an active role in the development and delivery of the H&S Management system

•Assist in the development of the procedures and processes
•Educate line managers and associates in the HSMS
•Maintain a good working knowledge of H&S related legislation relevant to the business and assigned areas
•Provide support and specialist advice service on H&S to the assigned business areas to support the effective implementation of H&S management systems
•Assist in providing competent H&S advise to assigned managers on legislative compliance and industry best practice
•Ensure that local health and safety procedures are followed in order to ensure own safety and the safety of others

Monitor health and safety performance across assigned business areas and undertake audit/inspection/review activities

•Carry out audits/inspections/reviews as defined the management system
•Communicate findings/trends/recommendations/actions as required to the area manager
•Coach/Influence line manages in improvement
•Respond to requests from internal customers for advise to facilitate a resolution of issues and problems

Skills and Experience

•Knowledge of implementation of health and safety arrangements in a manufacturing environment
•Knowledge of risk assessment techniques and tools
•Experience of incident investigation techniques
• Experience of H&S Auditing
•Experience of training and delivery

Practical and Technical Knowledge

Systems and Processes
•Fully conversant with Microsoft Office with high level of keyboard skills and accuracy
•Knowledge of HSG65 and OHSAS 18001 management systems

•Knowledge of H&S risk mitigation and control strategies
•Knowledge of incident investigation techniques and data analysis

•In depth knowledge of health and safety legislation and any developments that may affect the business

•Good communications skills – verbal and written
•Ability to train/present/communicate technical/complex mattes to a diverse range of audiences
•Ability to work autonomously and determine own work schedule
•Ability to develop strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
•Willingness to adapt/be flexible and to support other duties that may arise within the team
•Maintaining continual personal development to ensure professional currency


•Typically qualified to NEBOSH Diploma/Degree level with chartered membership of IOSH
•Chartered member of IOSH Or working towards

Further Information

This position is currently on a contract basis, with the intention to convert to permanent for the right person.
