The Company:
Our Upstream International business searches for and recovers oil and natural gas across the world. This spans from exploration activities to the commercial delivery of major upstream projects and to Production. Many of these activities are carried out as joint venture partnerships, often with national oil companies. The business also liquefies gas and is active in gas to liquids technology. Today, we have interests in Upstream activities in more than 39 countries and employ around 17,000 people

The Role:
As one of our Safety Engineers, you’ll be responsible for providing safety engineering expertise and guidance to a specific part of EPE’s operations, and work on functional initiatives that cover all areas of the organisation. Your skills and experience in the identification, assessment and management of major hazards mean you’ll be involved in a range of activities across the business.

Your principal role will be to ensure that facilities are designed and operated in a manner where the risks associated with major hazards has been reduced to a level which is as low as reasonably practicable. To do this, you’ll need to work closely with a broad cross-section of the organisation including other discipline engineers, appraisal and development engineers, project teams, operations, engineering and maintenance teams.

You’ll manage the maintenance of the HSE cases and safety studies that support the HSE case for one of the UK-based Assets and any future facilities. This will involve assessing the effect of engineering and operational changes through studies including HAZIDs/HAZOPs,fire and explosion analyses, and Quantitative Risk Analysis. You’ll also take the lead in identifying any measures that can be implemented to reduce the risks further.

As part of the Technical Authority system you’ll be responsible for ensuring that the safety engineering and hazard management standards are adhered to,or that requested deviations to these standards are assessed. Involved in the update or development of new standards, you’ll have an important role in the facility integrity management systems. With this in mind, you’ll be responsible for identifying the systems required to manage major hazards, defining the safety performance required from these systems and providing advice on what measures to take if the systems fail to deliver this performance.

Although primarily involved in EPE operations,we’ll encourage you to use your skills and experience in the wider global organisation, and seek assistance from others within the group. Responsible for defining and managing safety engineering activities performed by specialist consultants or contractors, you’ll also liaise with the regulator and industry groups on safety engineering issues.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
With a degree in engineering or science, it would be an advantage if you have a post-graduate qualification in safety engineering or hazard and risk management. Ideally, you’ll have experience in the petrochemical industry, together with a thorough understanding of technologies and practices as they relate to oil and gas production facilities. However, you may also be considered for this role if you have hazard and risk management experience gained in other industries.

It’s vital that you understand the requirements of effective hazard and risk management in an operating environment, and are keen to develop your career in this area. Self-motivation, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a good customer focus are essential qualities, and you’ll also need first-class written and verbal English skills.
