The Role:
The Senior Software Engineer is responsible to the Head of Software Engineering for executing allocated Software Work Packages within agreed cost, time and quality constraints.
Reporting to:
Head of Software Engineering (line management reporting)
Project Technical Manager (technical tasking)
The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for demonstrating that the developed software meets all specified legislative and customer requirements, by
- analysing requirements and specifying the software solution and work breakdown
- preparing software architectural and detailed design documentation
- generating source code to implement all aspects of the software detailed design
- integration of software onto the target platform
- providing software technical support

Job Requirements:
- Professional level, Academic plus any additional education degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering / IT discipline.
- Minimum level of professional experience to fulfil all job requirements (number of years): 5 - 10 years
- Experience in another company, preferably also professional experience

• All software is designed, developed, integrated and tested in accordance with Airbus Defence and Space standards; all supporting documents are produced in accordance with Airbus Defence and Space standards.
• Appropriate processes and methodologies are used to design and deliver allocated software development work packages meeting cost, time and quality targets, agreed with their Technical Manager.
• Technical design decisions are made within the context of known practices, established precedents and acquired “technical” expertise.
• The cost/benefits of design possibilities are understood, and that judgement calls can be made based on them.
• Software development plans can be estimated in detail, and resource requirements can be identified against plans.
• Success of both internal and external design reviews and project reviews throughout the development life cycle.
• The support of the design and development of critical components where decisions may have a significant impact on project timescales.
• Customer liaison, by representing Airbus Defence and Space on project related technical matters at Stakeholder meetings.
• Design and Development by taking a technical role as a Prime on a critical component where necessary.

Working Environment

• Effective collaboration with other engineering disciplines to agree specifications and to carry out integration and test
• Co-ordinate own time management with regard to project task milestones
Nature of tasks; Operational and Tactical:
• The primary focus of the job is Operational - delivery of project funded Work Packages.
• Analytical – To identify and isolate errors in the product or system, their likely causes and solutions.
• Ingenuity – To work on his/her own on a complete design from concept to delivery, possibly across multiple projects.
Technical Challenges:
• Needs to understand and devise intricate solutions to complex problems after lengthy and involved analysis
• Needs sustained technical understanding of all issues required to produce software for complex equipment
Management Challenges:
• Needs to use political and influencing skills to reach agreement on software matters with customers, project management, and Airbus Defence and Space engineering and support teams

Key Performance Measures:
Full + direct responsibility - Planned versus Actual metrics for cost, time and quality against completed Work Packages.
Full + direct responsibility - To design and develop the software identified in the Software Development Plan in line with project delivery milestones.
Full + direct responsibility - To provide technical guidance to fellow team members.
Partly responsible - To support the design and development of critical components where decisions may impact project timescales significantly.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Must have experience of embedded Linux/QNX device driver software development and integration for complex bespoke electronic products (eg multiprocessor FPGA based designs)
• Must have experience of embedded low level test software development for use in product development, integration, qualification and initial production
• Must have experience of optimising driver software for real time performance, minimising hardware power consumption and optimising use of hardware resources
• Must be familiar with process driven software development, including formal documentation of requirements, interface definitions, and test procedures
• Must have experience of the full project lifecycle
• Must have UK SC clearance
• Role is based, Newport, South Wales, with infrequent requirements for business travel within the UK
• Implementation of embedded software in C, running on bare metal or under an embedded real time operating system (Linux/QNX)
• Must have a good understanding of low lev

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
• Experience of ARMv7 assembly language programming
• Experience of Python programming
• Experience of using two or more of the following tools/development environments: Starteam, Eclipse, Coverity, Momentics, Code Composer Studio
• Experience of boundary scan test development
• Hardware/FPGA design knowledge
• Experience of software development for secure communications equipment, ideally using UK approved cryptographic design methodologies
