Job Title Sr Electrical Engineer

Work Location Geismar, LA Plant

Job Description Responsibilities:
• Provide input to GEP safety and maintenance procedures
• Ensure proper identification of equipment and power sources per NEC labeling requirements
• Investigate Electrical incidents and near misses, help determine root cause, write and issue reports, implement action items as necessary
• Ensure proper documentation of special operating and maintenance instructions associated with electrical equipment
• Be knowledgeable of referencing, interpreting, and applying the National Electric Code, National Electrical Safety Code, NFPA Codes, IEEE codes relative to safe design, and OSHA regulations.
• Be familiar with area classification methods including NEC, API, NFPA, and DEPS requirements, area classification drawings, classified areas within area of responsibility, equipment ratings and suitability for application in classified areas.
• Provide input to resolution of area classification issues such as determining suitability of equipment for the area and updating area classification drawings
• Be knowledgeable of requirements for and proper use and maintenance of PPE used in electrical work such as gloves, flash hoods, blankets used for electrical isolation, low and medium voltage checks with hot sticks and metering devices
• Provide input to operations regarding the safe operation of their electrical and process equipment
• Ensure proper coordination and appropriate management of electrical protection system.
• Identify Improvement Opportunities / New Capability Development
• Specify, purchase, and upgrade new/repaired equipment
• Identify applications of new technology for performance, maintainability, or reliability enhancements
• Evaluate electrical system for improvement and expansion opportunities
• Design new facilities
• Maintain Unit Hardware and Documentation
• Ensure resources to audit and inspect equipment prior to T/A in preparation to develop work lists
• Develop plan and help ensure resources to coordinate power outages and communicate accordingly
• Interface with Electrical Inspector to develop general scope of work, detail scope of work, man hour and cost estimates
• Review T/A summary report with Inspector and discuss findings to recommend new preventative maintenance plans or update existing ones
• Provide project support to minor projects during T/A
• Check and verify existing equipment settings with SKM coordination studies
• Identify repair versus replace options for electrical equipment; make recommendations for work scopes
• Estimate, scope and execute non-routine maintenance activities
• Develop/write/maintain procedures and standards as appropriate
• Generate and update equipment file folders, equipment settings and limits as appropriate
• Be familiar with the plant electrical distribution systems and alternate line ups that maintain power or restore it in a short time period in case of maintenance or repair work.
• Be familiar with power system high and low resistance grounding systems design, hardware, and installation practices.
• Support of office building electrical systems
• Support all types of power panel issues for normal, essential, and critical power
• Be familiar with the design, application, troubleshooting techniques, & switching procedures of
• UPS systems including charger, batteries, inverter, static switch, & power panel
• Local Electrical Heat Tracing Systems.
• Generate, update, and explain relay logic schematic diagrams and programmable logic controls. Approve substitution of parts, identification of spare parts.
• Be familiar with hardware and electrical interlock schemes on electrical equipment
• Provide guidance in securing power system during plant emergencies or unusual conditions
• Perform electrical equipment inspections
• Be a resource for Maintenance
• Predict how process and operating changes will impact performance of electrical systems.
• Review repair practices of contractors and vendors
• Perform or specify QA inspection to satisfy industry and standards
• Perform or specify additional inspection/testing
• Technical Assurance
• Provide Electrical support to ensure that GEP Cathodic protection systems are meeting requirements
• Participate in project and other reviews
• Provide guidance to the proper application of equipment and components
• Ensure testing program for electrical equipment is comprehensive and current, test results are within limits
• Ensure preventative maintenance program has identified preventative maintenance items, intervals, resource, and training issues
• 15KV Power Distribution Systems and below
• 5KV Power Utilization Systems and below
• Solid state computer based motor protection and protective relaying
• Synchronous Motors and Controls
• Electric Heat Tracing Systems
• Assure that the procedures are current and up to date (reviewed in specified time interval)
• Continue to meet existing as well as changing requirements from Regulatory and recognized Governing Industry Standards Association/Bodies.
• Establish standards for the discipline
• Input and review the design of new facilities
• Customer Support
• Customer technical electrical consulting
• Interface with vendors, contractors and customers outside of
• Training
• Provide training to maintenance technicians and operators on new electrical equipment and electrical related topics
• Overview as appropriate contractor training on electrical equipment and practices
• Attend required training
• Work with summer interns, new hires, temporary inspectors, and electrical inspectors
• The individual performing this job is personally responsible for:
• Discipline leadership, mentoring, and discipline support
• Develop long term improvement plans/strategies
• Identifying new technologies and best practices
• Site wide area classifications
• Sharing expertise, mentoring personnel and others involved in Electrical activities
• Interpretation of codes and standards
• Performing or directing code-required inspections on electrical equipment and equipment repairs
• Developing/implementing technical solutions to close the gaps on equipment reliability
• Reducing significant losses and safety risks by developing predictive and preventive methods to mitigate equipment degradation and failures

• Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
• Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as an electrical engineer required.
• Technical and trouble shooting skills required.
• Thorough knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems required.
• High voltage substation and switching skills are required for maintaining electrical distribution system required.
• Coordination and Protective relaying is required for plant electrical reliability required.
• Formal national electrical code training a plus
• Training in concepts in electrical power systems
• Experience working with the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical power systems
• Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, engineering guides, general specifications, and good engineering practice
• Expert electrical technology knowledge
• Deliberate and methodical approach to evaluation of job safety, alternatives, decision-making
• Awareness of outside resources (Vendor, HO, Tools) and how to access them
• Position is eligible for relocation package.
