The Company:
Our client, a diverse Canadian Energy Company, plans new developments estimated at $12+ Billion over the next 5 years.

This position is open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents only. Residents of Newfoundland & Labrador will be given first consideration for this position.

The Role:
The selected Candidate is expected to exercise a high level of personal initiative, sound judgement, and technical expertise in carrying out the duties and responsibilities. Will report directly, and be accountable, to the Area Manager, Synchronous Condensers. May also be involved in other work scopes within the HVdc Specialties team and therefore could also
periodically receive direction from other Area Managers, in particular HVdc Converters and ac Switchyards. Supervision will vary depending on the assignment and the degree of expertise of the incumbent.

Provide mechanical engineering support and expertise in the role of Owner's engineer related to the design, construction and commissioning of the HVdc Converters, ac Switchyards, and Synchronous Condensers, which are being executed as EPC turn-key contracts. The incumbent will perform the duties of a Mechanical Engineer, primarily specializing in the areas of large rotating equipment. Work closely with other team members in a multi-discipline project delivery environment.

• Complete detailed technical reviews of Contractor submittals and technical data (including, but not limited to, drawings, specifications, design studies, technical reports, etc.) to verify conformity with the Scope of Work, project design criteria, Nalcor standards, codes, practices, operating philosophy, good utility practise and constructability
• Lead / participate in design review and constructability review workshops
• Work with Contractor(s) to ensure the installed facilities
o meet all design, safety, quality, schedule, construction and regulatory requirements
o meet Project Goals for Safety, Operability, Reliability and Environmental Performance
• Participate in shop surveillance and factory acceptance tests
• Explore, analyse, and introduce new design concepts, solutions, and innovative methods for achieving the Project's strategic objectives, relying on basic theory, first principles, and original ideas.
• Facilitate problem resolution and assume responsibility for closure.
• Ensure opportunities for improvement to all aspects of performance (safety, environment, cost, schedule, quality, operations, reliability) are actively pursued and championed
• Organize and lead meetings, related to project delivery aspects, working to resolve issues that could impact overall performance objectives
• Maintain functional relationships and work closely with discipline engineers, Completions, and RFO
• Lead in owner's acceptance during commissioning and turnover stages
• Visit Site(s) as often as is necessary to monitor compliance with the specifications, prepare independent site visit
reports and inform functional groups of deviations (Quality, Completions, LCP construction management)
• Liaise with RFO in the development of a transition plan for turnover to Operations
• Provide technical leadership in the resolution of post commissioning start-up issues
• Provide input (observations, analysis) for warranty claims

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

• 15 + years successful experience, in technical as well as construction roles.
• Background in mechanical engineering and design including experience in large rotating machinery.
• Familiarity with large power generators, 50MVA+ (hydro generator experience is an asset), and its related process cooling and lube oil systems.
• Strong background with resolution of technical issues during projects planning and execution phases.
• Familiar with / experience in vibration analysis, FEA; FMEA, reliability assessment etc.
• Familiarity with codes and standards applicable with the discipline such as ASTM, ASME, ANSI, ASHRAE, CSA, etc.
• Able to operate under pressure and to the pace of construction
