The Company:
a major oil and gas operator

The Role:
The WSG supports drilling of rotary grass roots, sidetrack, and coiled-tubing drilling operations on Alaska’s North Slope. Responsibilities include onsite well geosteering, subsurface lithology and fluid descriptions, MWD/LWD logging interpretation, and drilling operational support. Well types include horizontal (single and multi-lateral), vertical, extended-reach and high-angle slant wells. This position requires close and regular interaction with subsurface functional teams in the Operator’s Anchorage office, wellsite team leaders and onsite rig personnel.

Supervisor Roles & Responsibilities
• Minimum half-time North Slope supervisory presence
• Single point of accountability to the Operator’s town representative
• Provide on-site WSG expertise as critical issues arise.
• Profound understanding of the strengths and weakness of all WSGs with the ability to step-in and take control if there is an issue.
• Provide fill-in for wellsite geologist as required
• Provide coaching and technical training to all WSG personnel
• Ensure all WSG personnel have appropriate safety and technical training and keep it up to date as required.
• Assure all procedures and reports are consistent and in alignment with standard operating procedures
• Manage WSG scheduling and rig assignments to ensure appropriate skill-level WSG expertise is available to accomplish the objectives for specific wells or programs.
• Assist WSG personnel with logistics, i.e. travel during change out, lodging during rig moves.
• Maintain geological records and material inventory. Review all WSG timesheets and expense reports for accuracy
• Manage travel logistics for WSG personnel between Anchorage and Prudhoe Bay. Travel will be via the GPB Shared Services Charter via booking system.

1. North Slope vehicle logistics

Core Responsibilities:
• 24/7 on-rig presence during all active rig operations.
• Awareness of and adherence to the Operator’s HSE and operational policies and practices.
• Perform assignments in accordance with the Company Core Values and Behaviors
• Perform assigned tasks on coil tubing and rotary rig drilling operations, day- and night-shift assignment and on rotational schedules.
• Perform well planning and project work in the Anchorage office as directed
• Attend scheduled meetings with the New Wells Delivery leadership team and technical staff in the Anchorage office as directed
• Proactively train and coach less-experienced personnel

General Operations Responsibilities:
• Collect and review required well site reference data, technical package, correlation / offset logs, maps, prognoses
• Pick casing point: using isopachs, changes in drilling parameters, samples
• Pick core point: using isopachs, changes in drilling parameters, samples
• Perform log correlation/interpretation
• Perform formation and fluid marker picks
• Revise/update geologic marker and target projections
• Geo-steer wellbore in complex fluvial deltaic sequences to achieve objectives of SOR
• Perform TD determination
• Perform wellbore trajectory landings and target adjustments to drill data
• Perform forward projections and apparent thickness corrections
• Perform fault recognition and characterization
• Interface with town geologist and technical staff: by phone, e-mail and in-person
• Advise town personnel on changes needed in well plan
• Advise rig team on geologic risks, morning meeting, and casing point / casing tallies
• Ensure directional driller understands and achieves geosteering and target objectives
• Advise MWD and mud logging personnel of program requirements and revisions and ensure delivery of program objectives
• Distribute daily reports, files and interpreted data to Operator’s representative and partners
• Formation/Reservoir characterization: Lithology, grain size, sorting, roundness, porosity, consolidation, cementation
• Hydrocarbons show analysis and description: stain, visual cut, surface fluorescence, cut fluorescence, percentage of HOT (heavy oil / tar) occluding porosity
• Sample quality control and documentation
• Depth control and tie-in on sidetracks, conventional wells, and CTD
• Onsite quality control for MWD / Wireline / Drill Pipe Conveyed logs
• Provide logging service company with oil normalization zones
• Witness log acquisition and quality control
• Required to catch and clean cuttings samples, if required.
• Daily file / documentation and final documentation maintenance
• Daily Reports, interpreted “Geosurvey” (using the Operator’s Excel-based application), lithology description
• Interpreted daily log with target projections
• Final perforation recommendations in collaboration with Town subsurface team(s)
• Prepare final operations report (End of Well Summary), interpreted log and digital log file(s)
• Maintain North Slope geology and engineering files; expedite final logs and data to Anchorage

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Geology or closely related earth science area of study.
• Supervisory experience that includes coaching/mentoring experience. A minimum of 10 years Wellsite Geologist experience
• At least 5 full years’ experience in a lead role actively geo-steering horizontal wells, i.e. “hands on” at the rig site.
• Minimum of 5 years experience as a WSG in the Alaskan North Slope
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with wellsite leader (company man), and coordinate activities with directional driller, MWD/logging engineer, mud engineer and office-based geologist
• Strong technical grounding in petroleum operations, operations and production geology, drilling and completions, and field development
• Sound background in basic well log interpretation: with ability to recognize and differentiate lithology, formation fluid responses and borehole effects
• Strong computer skills, particularly with MS Excel
