On Monday 2nd
May the University of Western Australia Young Engineers (UWAYE) Club held its 6th
annual Women in Engineering High Tea and Fircroft were delighted to be a part of
The UWAYE Club
is a student chapter of Engineers Australia at UWA, which promotes and generates
opportunities for engineering students to learn from professionals in the industry
and build up a network for their personal and professional development. Last Monday’s
high tea, sponsored by Fortescue Metals Group aimed to encourage gender diversity
within the engineering sector and marked UWA’s longest running diversity event for
Women in Engineering.
Through an afternoon
of speeches and networking in an informal environment, students had the opportunity
to be inspired by industry leaders, to learn more about their chosen profession
and understand what it is like to be a young female engineer within the industry.
In attendance were representatives from each of UWAYE’s sponsors including Fircroft,
Accenture, Alcoa, AMC Consultants, BHP Billiton, Engineers Australia, Georgiou,
GHD, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy.
included Nick Cernotta Director of Operations at FMG who discussed the measures
FMG were taking to establish a more gender diverse workforce. Kate Somerville Principal
Mining Engineer at AMC Consultants took to the stage to share her 10 year journey
through her career to date as a female in engineering and shared with us all what
FIFO life is like for both men and women alike. The event was a great opportunity
for students to ask their role models questions and to gain a glimpse into their
event it was clear to see the passion and drive the students of today have for the
industry of tomorrow and their enthusiasm and eager spirits filled the room. Not
only are these students studying full time but they are also involved in a committee
addressing the hot topics of current times and leading the way to challenge the
norm of the industry we work in. It is truly infectious to see such passion for
diversity and the keenness to achieve a more even playing field.
Fircroft are proud
sponsors of UWAYE, and through Fircroft’s scholarship programme we are sponsoring
one engineering student throughout their 5 year engineering degree. Fircroft are
passionate about offering opportunities to those in financial hardship and indigenous
individuals that otherwise may not have the opportunity to pursue their education
and career in engineering. In these dynamic markets it is important not to lose
sight of the future leaders of our industry- businesses should constantly be looking
to ‘pay it forward’.
